Depending on where the sawdust came from, the color ranges from light tan to brown. The flour makes it stick better in case of rain and makes it more visible when marking off pavement. The Malaysian hashes use squares of paper (~ 2" x 2") with the hash logo stamped on them. I guess they don't have much wind there. I used to use an extremely dense and bright orange paint powder (water based) cut 1:3 with flour in Korea. It washed away okay but raised a lot more eyebrows than when I used flour. I've also seen hashes use crushed breakfast cereal (the really bright colorful stuff) mixed with flour. This is expensive and you have to worry about dogs [hahaha] eating the hash!
