How 9.11 Unexpectedly Improved My Life
This feature is taken from E.A.9.11, Group 9. See the entire discussion: How has your life been effected after 9-11?.

Hey every1,
I think everyone's life changed after 911, even if it was just a little. After the World Trade Center collapsed, I was pretty scared and freaked out, and I remember as soon as I came home I didn't want to be alone so I called my friends and we just talked. But after I saw those images on TV of the towers collapsing, and heard about how people jumped out of the windows so it wouldn't hurt as much when they died, my life changed. It's kind of hard to watch those things and not feel different.

I'm kind of nicer to people now, and this is kind of weird, but I always make sure that I'm not mad at anyone I'm not going to see for a while, in case something happens to them while we're apart. But I think everyone has just been nicer and more giving and definitely more patriotic.

I think the immediate weeks after 9/11 I was scared to go on the subway and sounds of airplanes would scare me. I guess I just was scared of being in New York City. I was really fearful for my friends especially those who seemed they were of middle eastern descent. All the patriotism scared me and I was upset because if I dared to criticize anything I was "on their side". I mean after the initial shock I was "back to normal" but I still felt as if my freedom to express myself was barred since all this new found patriotism. The writer of the Boondocks (sp?) said it best when he said its funny how everyone is so patriotic now when after the election everyone was damming the country. Yes I am an American and I realize that I have all these rights many people don't and that a tragedy happened. But we shouldn't forget about things such as racial profiling, the bombing of vieques, homophobia, and all these other things that are wrong in our country.

Oh, MacSuxHansonRules that was an awesome statement at the end of your message! You said it perfectly, I totally agree with you.

That evening I went to my school chapel to read what i had written after our headmaster had told us of the news. I didn't see any pictures that day, beacause I didn't get to watch tv in the dorm, but for some unknown reason to me, I just stood up in the chapel and couldn't say a word but just cried uncontrolably.

Then our school minister came up to me, and just read it herself , since I couldn't do it. I just felt this deep hold up in my throught that wouldn't allow me to make a sound.

But, then a couple of days after that I bacame rather mad. No, not at the terrorists(although yes of course I blame them), but instead I got mad at the fact that it took usa this long to wake up and realize that there is a problem with this type of behavior. I was mad at the fact that when something happens to the usa it IS ONLY THEN that some action is seriously taken.

So, then I thought a lot about all that I was thinking, and reorganized my negative "karma" and used it within opening my mind up to opinions at the school debates or discussions we had. Now, I am pretty sure what my stand is within this whole mess of views, but I think that the greatest effect that the occurances of September 11th had on was my ability to be able to concider all sides of the story and not be close minded or biased.

THanks for reading,bye
Tamara

Hey! I think that all of you have made wonderful comments. The first time I heard an airplane in the sky after 9-11, I freaked out. I didn't like how everyone all of a sudden started to have American Pride. I mean, yes, I am an American. But, it shouldn't have to be an event such as this to bring the nation together. Yes, I do agree that we still have problems that we need to finish here before we can fix the world. It is kind of hypocritical that the United States is trying to stop terrorism, and yet, look the other way on the United States issues. I think now matter who you are, everyone was effected.

Hey!
I agree with all of you! I freaked out when I first saw a plane in the sky after 911, too. I guess I was just really suprised. Another way my life has been affected after 911, though, is that I'm afraid to go on planes. I haven't been on one since 911, but I'll be going on vacation in a week and I'm flying on a plane to get there. I've been worrying about this for weeks because I'm just really nervous. I think that after 911, people are also more patriotic. I kind of like being so patriotic, and I especially like that after 911, our country sort of did unite, because I just felt more at home here even though I have lived here all my life, and people are just nicer to each other.
